• More prone to cracking around cross drilled holes of the friction rings after track use/abuse
• Inadequate thermal capacity to absorb and dissipate the heat generated, especially with all the mods which adds power, and sometimes weight to the vehicle
• Longevity of stock calipers: cracked/melted dust boots and pressure seals, fluid leaks, discoloration of the calipers, etc.
• Clicking brake noise when turning. Solution: clean the wheel hub mounting surface and aluminum hat mounting surface. Make sure these surfaces are completely flat and clean, and free from any rust, burrs, dents and abnormal wear. Avoid using aluminum or titanium lug nuts. Torque the lug nuts to the correct specifications
Rotors should be replaced when they are close to, or have reached the minimum thickness. Rotors that are too thin will not work as designed due to the inadequate mass/thermal capacity.
09-11 Front rotor thickness: New: 34mm (1.34"). Service limit: 32mm (1.26")
12+ Front rotor thickness: New: 32.8mm (1.29"). Service limit: 30.8mm (1.21")
Rear rotor thickness: New: 30mm (1.18"). Service limit: 28mm (1.10")
Replace the rotors if there are excessive cracks. Refer to the following link for more information: https://paragonbrakes.com/rotor-inspection-and-maintenance/
NOTE:
• Always replace both discs (left and right) as a set
Front pad friction material thickness: New: 11.1mm (0.437"). Service limit: 4.5mm (0.177")
Rear pad friction material thickness: New: 12.1mm (0.476"). Service limit: 4.5mm (0.177")
CAUTION:
• Pad thickness (inner and outer pads) must be checked before any track day
Powered by the VR38DETT 3.8L engine (565 to 600 hp) and weighing over 3800 lbs, the GT-R is very demanding on the brakes. The stock brake system with Brembo calipers and drilled 2-piece discs can be a good starting point, but not the best option for track/heavy use. Depending on the intended use, driving habit, personal preference, and budget, the following options are available:
• Aftermarket rotor rings + pads with higher effective temperature range/fade resistance + high temp brake fluid: the most cost effective way to prep the vehicle for track/heavy duty use. Retains stock rotor hat (= reduced cost), and no more premature cracking around the drilled holes. Recommended: Paragon OE replacement rotor rings, P3/R5 front and rear brake pads, Castrol SRF brake fluid.
• High performance 2-piece rotors + track pads + brake fluid: will last longer and outperform stock brakes. Recommended: Paragon front and rear 2-piece rotors + track pads + high temp fluid
• Complete big brake kits: ultimate track/race performance. There are certain limitations of the OEM brake system for example the longevity of external dust boots and pressure seals, thermal capacity of the stock/stock size rotors, etc. A proper BBK will be able to address these issues.
* Stainless steel braided brake lines and titanium pad shims can be added at any point
