Stock Performance Model 3 brakes are decent, but are not designed to handle heavy track use. The straight vane rotors are not as efficient at cooling, and do not have adequate thermal capacity to absorb and dissipate the heat generated. The OE Model 3 Performance brakes may not be up to the task as the vehicle weighs 4,250 lbs and is able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds, which is way heavier and faster than a lot of modern sports cars. The following upgrade options are available:
• Pads with higher effective temp range/fade resistance + high temp brake fluid: the most cost effective way to prep the vehicle for track. Recommended: Paragon P3/R5 front pads, P3/R5 rear pads, ATE Type 200 (Super Blue) / Motul RBF600/RBF660 / Endless RF650 / Castrol SRF brake fluid
• High performance floating 2-piece rotors + track pads: a significant upgrade from the stock setup. Will last longer and outperform OEM brakes in all aspects. Range improvements are possible with lighter rotors (reduced rotational mass). Recommended: Paragon front and rear 2-piece rotors + track pads + high temp fluid
• Front big brake kit + aftermarket 2-piece rear rotors + race pads: ultimate track performance. Recommended: Paragon Track Performance front BBK + Paragon rear 2-piece rotors
* Master cylinder brace, stainless steel braided brake lines and titanium pad shims can be added at any point
• Pebbles or small rocks stuck between the rotor and the heat shield, creating a squealing sound
• 3mm hub step/lip issue. Special step hubcentric rings may be required to fit aftermarket wheels
• Excessive surface rust on the rotors. If the physical brakes are not used for an extended period of time (when braking is mostly done using regen), there could be excessive surface rust on the rotors and may lead to grinding noise while braking. Use the brake pedal and brake hard periodically to prevent excessive rust build up, and provide a clear friction surface for emergency braking
If properly bedded-in, the rotors and pads can last significantly longer. Regenerative braking will help extend the life of the physical brakes. Rotors should be replaced when they are close to, or have reached the minimum thickness.
Front rotor thickness: New: 25mm (0.98"). Service limit: 23mm (0.91")
Rear rotor thickness: New: 20mm (0.79"). Service limit: 18mm (0.71")
Replace the rotors if there are excessive thermal cracks on the rotor surface. For more info: https://paragonbrakes.com/rotor-inspection-and-maintenance/
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:
• Replace both discs (left and right) as a set
